Creating unique childhood memories with a Photo-Video Shoot

Finding Originality

January and February is that time of the year when every photographer plans the year ahead – updating portfolios and websites, launching new product lists and marketing strategies, doing budgets and so on. For me, it’s also a time for self-reflection, trying to find new ways of improving my artistic self. How can I create better art and not repeat myself is a constant question that almost tortures me at the beginning of each year. On top of that, social media, although it helps create amazing communities, can be a source of self-doubt. There is so much content out there (outstanding content, I must add!) that sometimes it’s easy to lose track of one’s own voice. So, to shake it off, I watched Annie Leibovitz’s courses on Masterclass and I was surprised that she did not talk about Behind the Scenes stories or even educational & technical stuff – she mainly told stories (of her own self-search). It is liberating knowing that the struggle is part of every artist’s journey, no matter the status or the type of photography you do. So in the spirit of liberating myself from doubt or social pressure, I picked up my camera, looked for inspiration and just shot from ‘the heart’. Sometimes we need to change the perspective to see things better.

Creating Unique Childhood Memories

And I realized (again!) that my true passion lies in creating memories of a candid and unplugged childhood for all the kids I meet. I create for them the memories I wish I had from my childhood. For me family photography is a time machine, a gateway to our most precious memories. Let’s face it, we tend to forget many of the everyday sweet moments and even more importantly, our children aren’t going to remember a huge part of their childhood. Take a baby’s first years of life – this is such a wonderful time, a rollercoaster of experiences and discoveries; and yet – when we grow up we cannot access early childhood memories other than through photography and videos. That’s how I came up with the idea of creating a Digital Family Album.

Digital Family Album

So what is a ‘Digital Family Album’? I like to tell a family’s story at each shoot and photography is a wonderful tool to capture that story, but I strive for more! And by more, I mean Family Videos. A video can show how in an instant a toddler can change their facial expression from happiness to disapproval, how a baby reacts to an impromptu peekaboo game, how cute and messy feeding time can be, how much patience parents have with their children… There’s more childhood magic if you add videos to a family album.

Lifestyle and Documentary Approach

So I set to create some photo-video family albums (Digital Albums, I call them) for my sweet families. My approach is 100% lifestyle with a touch of documentary, because I want to show ‘the real’ rather than ‘the perfect’. Family life is about joyful and loving moments, but it also comes with its glorious messiness and day-to-day struggles. I love capturing both sides of it, it will make these memories even more precious with time…

Basically I want to create a visual memory of one’s childhood. A memory that can be accessed anytime and brings back that romance that makes us nostalgic for our early years. A mix of family photos and family videos.

Here’s my first shared attempt of a Photo – Video Family Album, my lifestyle in-home shoot with one of my favorite families. This would be our 4th session together in three years and every single time, I am amazed how sweet and loving they are… I spent a morning with Mathilde and Charlotte whilst they had a fun Sunday morning playing Uno, making fake snow, constructing a fairy garden, reading and spending lots of quality time with their loving parents. Here’s how love and connection looks like in this family:
